Professor Ivica Puljak, Ph.D. is a regular professor of physics on the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture in Split. He obtained a degree in electrical engineering at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, a master's degree in particle physics at the Faculty of Science in Zagreb and a doctor's degree in physics at the Pierre-and-Marie-Curie University in Paris. He has completed his doctoral thesis at the Ecole Polytechnique in Palaise near Paris. He is a member of the CMS and MAGIC collaborations, his specific research field being the search for the Higgs boson and astroparticle physics. He is active in the promotion and popularisation of science.
Plenary presentation: "What don't we know?"
Out of what is the universe constructed? How does a fertilized egg become a human being? How the brain produces consciousness? Is time an illusion? How does the placebo effect work? What happened to the Neanderthals? Why do we sleep? Where and when life arose on Earth?
These are just some of the questions that modern science has not (yet) know the answer. At the same time, these are very active areas of research, using scientific methodology and modern technology. Some questions will very likely soon be answered, and some will leave a legacy for generations to come. As a human race we have made very great progress in understanding the nature and the many discoveries are still ahead of us.
This lecture will touch on some of the most interesting questions to which we do not know the answer as a stimulus for reflection and discussion.
