Based on statistics of security incidents reported to CARNet CERT, the number of security incidents has been raising during the years. Most incidents begin with probing the network in order to find vulnerable systems. After being compromised, those systems are often used as a stepping-stone for further attacks on other systems.

In order to help system administrators better maintain their networks, CARNet CERT established Vulnerability Scanning service for CARNet affiliates.

The aim of this BOF is to explain and discuss CERT VUS service in the broader context of institution's security.
