Abstract
In order to publish a large amount of information on their websites,
academic institutions need to have systems that will enable them easy
and fast publishing without long periods of education and adaptation
in order to accept such systems. Usage of such systems have to be distributed
to all organisation's subjects instead of being limited to a small group
of technologically adept people in organisation. Aim of this paper is
to test suitability of implementing Typo3 content management system
in academic institutions in Croatia in order to improve web publishing
process of this institutions. Suitability is tested comparing Typo3
concepts and features against widely accepted requirements for web content
management systems in general and also considering specific conditions
found in Croatian academic network environment.
INTRODUCTION
In order to publish a large amounts of information on their websites
academic institutions need to have systems that will enable them easy
and fast publishing without long periods of education and adaptation
in order to accept such systems. Usage of such systems have to be distributed
to all organisation's subjects instead of being limited to a small group
of technologically adept people in organisation. Typo3 CMS is web content
management system published under GPL license. His primary goal is to
provide advanced cms features of high-end cms systems to users that
can not afford high-end investments in this field but have high-end
needs. Aim of this paper is to test suitability of implementing Typo3
content management system in academic institutions in Croatia in order
to improve web publishing process of this institutions. Suitability
is tested comparing Typo3 concepts and features against widely accepted
requiremens for web content management systems in general and also considering
specific conditions found in Croatian academic network environment.
1. COMMON REQUIREMENTS FOR WEB CMS
In last few years term web content management systems have been thoroughly
examined and defined. For needs of this research author is using guidelines
published at: [1] http://www.steptwo.com.au/papers/kmc_evaluate/ for
testing cms requirements (especially for content creation and content
management ) and comparing Typo3 system against those defined requirements
to see how it fulfils basic cms requirements. Results are in most cases
satisfactory, but Typo3 also fails in a few important areas as content
versioning and work flow management. However, for most of the areas
that Typo3 fails this test, solutions are currently in development.
2. SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS IN CROATIAN ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT
Croatian Academic and Research network provided Croatian academic society
with common IT infrastructure providing also a common base for CMS implementation.
That common base includes many advantages for implementing single CMS
solution on many institutions. However, so many different institutions
involved can cause additional restrictions and a broader set of requirements.
This advantages, restrictions and requirements are here defined and
Typo3 is tested against them. Typo3 gives very good results at this
tests.
3. MOST IMPORTANT FEATURES AND OVERALL PERFORMANCE
With so much requirements it is necessary to prioritize them in order
to test system's suitability for performing most important tasks. Since
simplicity and ease of web publishing for broad segment of different
users is most important factor for acceptance and desired usage of a
system, importance of features is rated on their ability to simplify
and improve content creation process. Based on features such as: content
formatting options, content reusage and portability, user administration,
user privileges system, etc. Typo3 system emerges as a very good solution
for web content management in Croatian academic institutions.
CONCLUSION
Comparing Typo3 features and concepts with above stated requirements
positions Typo3 system as an above average CMS that can compete with
many commercially available systems. However, specific set of features
that Typo3 offers puts it as one of excellent solutions for implementation
in Croatian academic environment since this system is suited to fulfil
almostall specific requirements for usage in this field.
