After a short overview of the technology called Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), the presentation gives a survey of current and future applications of this technology like large scale indexing systems of any number of LDAP servers, Directory technology for a PKI certificate repository, for a central authentication and authorization service and Single Sign On, for storing routing policy and IPSec policy, for a repository of metadata and ontologies to create a coherent meta information layer independantly from the information layer WWW. The presentation ends with some visions about where directory technology could go in the future.
