The HPD (Croatian National Science society; non profit and non-govermental
organization) launched the project "E-School for young
scientists", (abb. "E-School") in 1997. The society
established a Section under the same name in 1998, after it
recognition the importance of the project. The Section coordinates
and operated the "E-School" project, which after two
years of operation, engages about 30 high schools in Croatia,
about 40 high school professors, and about 40 scientists from
the University of Zagreb and scientific institutes (e.g. Ruđer
Bošković Institute and Institute of Physics). The schools are
mainly from rural areas of Croatia.
The
fields covered so far by the "E-School" project are:
astronomy, biology, chemistry, geography and physics. In next
period we plan further development by expanding the number of
schools and by starting new fields (mathematics, environment,
archeology,
).
The
main purposes of the E-School project are:
- an
active interaction between ambitious and/or gifted students
and their school professors, on the one hand, with the scientists
from the universities and/or institutes, on the other hand,
through the Internet facilities (E-mail, Web pages: literature,
further links,
)
- to
train professors and students in practical use of Internet
and how to use PC facilities in specific problems in science
and in teaching.
Particular
forms of interaction are question-answer models, discussions,
students science projects, practicum,
These forms are mastered
and supervised by scientists, as well as Web pages. However,
the initiatives and suggestions, besides the questions, from
students and their professors are expected.
The
E-School project makes possible individual work with ambitious
and/or gifted students, and in general encourages and stimulates
the students for further carriers in science and technology
in their university education. For high school professors their
involvement in E-School project provides permanent professional
education.
