Metadata on the Web

abstract | author | presentation

Miroslav Milinovic, SRCE, Zagreb

Concept of metadata has been introduced to enhance the quality of Internet, mainly Web, information space. Nevertheless metadata were not so widely used on the Web. We experience problems in the deployment phase – standards are not generally accepted, real value is not fully recognised by the Web publishers and users. Metadata has been misused and misinterpreted. Still, with the new developments in the area of Semantic Web and Web services it is clear that the metadata are one of the key elements for future improvement of the Web information space.

The goal of this workshop is to put more light on the metadata concept especially on the proposed standards and syntax solutions. After the short overview of the basic concepts we discuss usage of metadata for resource discovery. Dublin Core standard will be discussed and demonstrated together with HTML and RDF (XML) syntax solutions. Quantity and quality of metadata in the Croatian Web space will be analysed and discussed.

Workshop is designed primarily for information providers who want to enhance the quality of their Web space but everybody who wishes to learn more about metadata is welcome. Basic experience with web publishing is expected.
