More and more, we have to rely on
the Internet search engines in order to find a concrete information
we are looking for on the Internet. During this process of searching,
the user is looking at the search engine strictly through his
interface, while other parts of the system stay hidden. The basic
task of the search engine interface is to simplify the procedure
of creating a proper request and to display as much relevant information
as possible in a way user can easily understand and access it.
Each search engine has its own concept of the "ideal interface"
and "the ideal formula for the query", but it is usually the user
who sets parameters which give him the best possible results.
Because of the given variations, the user has to learn how to
use each search engine separately. Can this be avoided or perhaps
simplified? What is more important for the user, and how can we
evaluate interfaces? The author offers a detailed analysis of
the approaches and concepts used during the process of creation
of the interface, through which the query is made, and some of
the specific parameters which characterize some of the most popular
search engines today. Parallel to this analysis of the global
search engines, there will be an analysis of the first Croatian
search engine - CROSS, and the relevant information acquired from
the usage of this search engine. As the result of this analysis
the author offers a suggestion of a new innovative search engine
interface and which would be more functional and would make the
creation of the queries much easier for the first time users.
