Distance learning has evolved form correspondence courses (back
in late 1800's) and TV presentations to much more interactive
form of lectures delivery. Internet technologies give new and
exciting possibilities. Forced with new trends like increasing
competition, globalization, demands for lifelong learning and
learner-centered programs academic and education community is
faced with new challenges. These challenges include development
and maintenance of high quality content available over the Internet
ensuring the reliable high volume delivery of instructions material
and enabling interactivity between students and teachers.
Are modern information technologies capable of fulfilling the
demands that come out from these challenges? Should we spend
more money on communication technology then on bricks and mortar?
Will modern distance learning tools and techniques change the
way we learn and teach? Will they change the concept of the
university or just pass as a fad?
