George Munroe graduated from Queen's University
Belfast with an honours degree in Physics. His subsequent research
in Biophysics involved harnessing computers to both automate
lab experiments and analyse results. He completed his PhD in
1987, but by then had already become fully engaged in supporting
a diverse range of University research and teaching through
responsibility for applications software in the University's
Computer Centre. His
desire to 'apply' computer technology led to an open embrace
of internet technologies and establishing network information
services at Queen's. His interest extended to European activities
where he has chaired two TERENA (Trans European Research and
Education Network Association) task forces and was involved
in drafting several other projects. In 1994 he formed a small
internet company in Northern Ireland and three years later left
the University. In 1998 he became managing director of the company
he formed, UNITE Solutions. He is also a 'trainer' for
the Internet Society's annual network workshops for countries
in the early stages of development.
