12th CARNet Users Conference successfully ended

12th CARNet Users Conference took place at the University of Split, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, from 15-17 November 2010. The conference was organized by the Croatian Academic and Research Network – CARNet and was held under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Croatia and the Ministry of Science, Education and Sport.

Entitled “New Challenges“, the conference offered 62 papers, 14 workshops, 13 presentations, a film, one panel discussion and round table. Keynote speeches were delivered by prominent speakers and ICT experts – the President of the Republic of Macedonia H.E. Gjorgje Ivanov, Hannes Lubich, full-time professor at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland, Switzerland, and Michael Wegmann, senior product manager (Microsoft Online).

At the opening ceremony the “e-Split” project was presented, a first public-public partnership between CARNet and the city of Split which enabled the construction of the first CARNet owned optical infrastructure in the City of Split.

As well as previous years, two supporting events complemented the conference program. The first one was the contest of web content authors, Webfestival 2010. In an attempt to encourage the use of ICT in education, from the elementary school to University, the Webfestival dealt with educational contents published in one of the most widespread open-code learning management systems – Moodle. The second event was the contest for the best school web site created in the CARNet CMS system. “Spruce up the web! 2010”.

The conference gathered 380 onsite participants and around 30 journalists, while the opening ceremony assembled 440 participants and CARNet guests. CARNet Media on Demand portal provided conference programme to those who were not able to attend the conference onsite in Split. In addition, this year for the first time, the conference program was attainable via mobile phones, as well.
