• A dictionary format for metadata terms:

  • Simple XML format for terms and definitions

• Example: "Title" (Dublin Core)

  • Human-readable label and definition:
    • Title: A name given to the resource.
  • Unique, machine-readable identifiers
    • dc:title

• Support for cross-references

  • between terms in related standards
  • between local adaptations and related standards
